Hiroshi Sako* received the B.E. and M.E. degrees in mechanical
engineering from Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan, in 1975 and 1977,
respectively, and the Dr. Eng. degree in computer science from the University
of Tokyo, in 1992.
From 1977 to 2011, he worked for Hitachi, Ltd. Since April in 2011, he has been a professor of the Graduate School of Computer and Information Sciences, Hosei University, Japan and a visiting researcher at University of Ulster, UK, as well.
From 1977 to 1992, he worked in the field of industrial machine vision at the Central Research Laboratory of Hitachi, Ltd., Tokyo, Japan (HCRL). From 1992 to 1995, he was a Senior Research Scientist at Hitachi Dublin Laboratory, Ireland, where he did research in facial and hand gesture recognition. From 1996 to 2009, he was a Chief Researcher at the HCRL where he directed research groups of character recognition and image recognition. From 2009 to 2011, he was a senior manager of the global R&D operation office in the R&D Headquarter, Hitachi Ltd. During 1998 to 2011, he has been also a Visiting Professor at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Hokuriku Postgraduate University.
His current research interest includes machine vision, character recognition, pattern recognition, and their application including computational forensics. He was a recipient of the 1988 Best Paper Award from the Institute of Electronics, Information, and Communication Engineers (IEICE) of Japan and the 1994 Industrial Paper Award from 12th IAPR International Conference on Pattern Recognition, Jerusalem, Israel, and in 2009 he won the Okochi Memorial Technology Prize for the contribution to the development of overseas cash-recycling automated teller machines. He has authored around 70 technical papers and 100 patents in the area of pattern recognition, image processing and neural networks. He is a member of the editorial boards of journals including Pattern Recognition Letters.
Dr. Sako is a Fellow of the IEEE Computer Society, a Fellow of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR), and a Fellow of the IEICE of Japan, and he is a member of the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence, the Information Processing Society of Japan, and the Hitachi Henjin-kai.
*Note: Dr. Hiroshi Sako used to write his family name in a few different alphabetical Romanized expressions until around 1992 in order to approximate his Japanese surname phonetically. These include “Sakou” and “Sakow”, but he is presently using “Sako” as its the best approximation.
